Chat mags - Fake News

Women's chat mags - Fake News

Where do these magazines get their stories from?

They pick their way through local newspaper stories and reports from around the world, looking specifically for stories of horrific killings by males. against women or children.  It doesn't matter if the story is an old one - these magazines are not newspapers.
Women's magazine, "Tale a Break"
pays up to £2,000 for a story.
They may listen to you,
but they'll be the ones to decide
what eventually goes in your story

If the see a story in a local paper about violence inflicted by men on women, they contact the victim and offer them money to allow them to write it again and publish it.

They also offer hard cash on their websites for other such stories.

And sometimes, the person who actually sells their story to these magazines discovered to their horror that the magazine will put their own spin on the story, depicting their loved ones in quite a different way.   The social network NetMums.co.uk carried this cry for help from one such exploited person who submitted their story to one of these national magazines (from April 2011) only to see a completely different story published that the one they submitted.

She described it as "a negative, horrible, twisted, altered, nasty article (they) plastered about me. They even printed things that weren't said!  Nothing in the article was accurate!"

She added.. "The magazine tricked me! They twisted the story and printed the total opposite and used pictures of my children! I didn't take a penny from them. How can they get away with doing this?"   She refused any payment for her story.

See here for more information on this.

"Chat Magazine" faked a murder photo.

All these chat magazines claim that their stories and accompanying photos are "100% True" and "Real-Life".  The Press Complaints Commission didn't agree when it said that Chat magazine breached the code of practice twice after staging a photograph of a murder victim, which you can read here.

In 2007, Chat Magazine had carried a photo claiming it was a woman's corpse wrapped up in black bin liners. This turned out to be faked. The victim’s step-father complained to the commission saying the photo "had caused considerable distress to the family" and adding that "one family member had believed that it was actually the victim."

The commission was also concerned that the fake photo was published close to the anniversary of the victim’s death showing "a total disregard for the family of the dead woman" by the magazine.  It was found in breach of clause 5 ("intrusion into grief and shock") of the code.

More trouble with Press Complaints Commission for "That's Life".

That's Life - Make Money off a Murder

  • In April 2013, "That’s Life" was censured by IPSO’s predecessor, the Press Complaints Commission, for breaching the code by paying the sister of a murderer for her story, ruling that she had directly benefited from her brother’s crime.  iMediaEthics covered that ruling, which found that "That’s Life" essentially let the family make money off of a murder.  More here.

That's Life - "Mis-interpret" a story

  • That’s Life, published by Bauer Publishing and describes itself as “Britain’s leading real-life magazine, publishing “100% real life stories” has been censured by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) for running a story that turned out to be anything but real.
  • The Guardian‘s Roy Greenslade noted that "That’s Life" got in trouble with the Press Complaints Commission. In October 2014, That’s Life carried an article under the byline of Leanne Owens headlined “I’d rather die than kill my baby.”  This turned out to be a misrepresentation of the true events  Leanne Owens complained and they were forced to print an apology.

That's Life - Discriminate against physical condition of cancer patient.

  • A woman complained that a real life story about her husband's fight against cancer contained inaccuracies and discriminated against his physical condition.  The complaint was resolved when the magazine sent a private letter of apology to the complainant and her husband, marked its internal records with the points raised as part of the complaint and made clear that the story would not be reproduced.  Read the PPC report here.

Chat Magazine - "..not the view shared by our family, or our close friends"

  • A close friend of a murder victim featured in one of Chat's stories, complained on their behalf that the story about the murder of the mother and her son, saying it was an "inaccurate representation of the true circumstances".
  • The complaint was resolved when the magazine agreed to publish a letter from the complainant and the family with the following wording:
  • We wish to express how strongly my family and our close friends feel about a story published in Chat magazine issue 11 dated 23 March 2006 headlined Shattered. We would like to point out that the story you printed was one person's view of a terrible tragedy and is not the view shared by our family, or our close friends. We wish to be allowed to grieve in private & put closure on this terrible event.
  • More information here.

Chat Magazine - Photos affected the children

  • Chat Mag wrote a salacious article headlined "Sex, Lies and Corner Caffs" and published it on December 23 1998 along with photos of the family's children.  The mother complained that using the photograph of her children was in breach of the rules.
  • The article detailed the breakdown of the marriage of the complainant's parents-in-law from her mother-in-law's point of view. The photograph showed the children with their grandfather and even though it was two years old the complainant said that her children were still clearly identifiable. The complainant had not given permission for the photograph to be published and her nine year old daughter had been embarrassed by remarks made at her school.  The complaint was upheld.

It has thousands of prizes for you to win, and features loads of gritty tales of horror and abuse, as well as plastic surgery gone wrong and grisly murders, but also loads of heartwarming, uplifting stories about pets, families reunited, and weddings, to name but a few. And remember, it’s all true and happened to people like me and you!

Paper Versions of Click-Bait

A trend that these magazines have started using on their front pages around summer of 2018 is the use of pernicious "click-bait" headlines.  These are horrific headlines followed by some text that compels you to look further - just like click-bait does on web pages.
Horror stories with smiling faces

Here's some of their examples...

  • My MUM walked in as DAD was raping me - Would she save me?
  • BEATEN AND PREGNANT BY A FLASHER - then he did something even sicker
  • I woke to my DATE SAWING OFF my FEET -  but he'd done WORSE to my PUPPY

Children also become intrigued and attracted by these inappropriate adult clickbait headlines, sat next to their comics.

What Others Think

You can get an idea of what others think about these magazines by reading some of the articles written about them.  Here's some references to a few of the articles.

Website: VICE.COM

Meeting the People Behind the Grim Headlines of Women's Weekly Magazines
  • Quote: "Who is buying this undulating wave of misery porn? As a rule: mums and nans. And as a result of their thirst for despair, the UK's weekly cover headlines have turned into a luminous collage of unimaginable horror.  At its height, the biggest consumer women's weekly, Take a Break, sold nearly a million copies a week."

Website: iNDEPENDENT.COM

Magazines: Time for a reality check
  • Quote: "Who on earth, you ask, wants to read this stuff? And the answer is: millions of people. Every week, a combined market of nine million readers shells out their 60p or £1 for their weekly fix of family secrets, ghastly revelations, sick babies, traumatised oldsters, deformed body parts and shocking news from abroad. It's a market that has grown steadily."

Chat mags - Anything Goes

Chat mags - Anything Goes.

Once you get past all the smiling ladies faces on the covers, you'll find that no subject is too salacious or obnoxious for the appetite of the readership of these women's chat magazines - just as long as all the stories are about males who are lust-filled rapists or blood-thirsty maniacs.. and the victims are all female or children... or preferably both.

While you're looking at this list, remember that the newsagents and supermarkets often display these women's magazines close to the children's comics where they can easily see these covers. We didn't tolerate that with the lad's mags, so why are we OK with this?

Incest...

Husbands having sex with their children and
brothers having sex with their sisters... the readers love stories about it.

Burnt Alive...

Being burned to death or scarred for life -
it's something they all want to read about.

Tortured to Death...

Torturing someone to death is regarded as entertainment for the women's coffee break, especially if the victim is a child.
Even better if it's the child's daddy who's doing it.

Hacked to Bits...

Why not read about victims having limbs hacked off while you're having your cuppa?  Legs... feet... heads... they all get cut off in these magazines.

Paedophiles...

These women's magazines love to publish the stories about paedophiles and their readers love to read about them.

Cannibalism...

Maybe you fancy something a little different with your lunch-time break today?
How about a spot of cannibalism?

Enforced Nudity...

There may not be any pictures of naked women in these magazines but they do like to print stories about women being forced to strip  - and being abused.

Beheaded...

They don't even stop at stories of women being beheaded...

Dirty Old Grandad...

Grandfathers can also be rapists, paedos, murderers, killers... especially if those are the only sort of stories they ever choose to print about them.

Having Dad's Babies...

Incest with Dad? What better subject to read about over your afternoon cuppa?

In Your Face...

Take your pick - you can be shot in the face, stabbed in the face or have acid thrown in your face...

Butchered...

Or you can read about women and children being butchered by men...

Pregnant...

Falling pregnant is never a good thing in these women's chat magazines

Choose Your Weapon...

You can read about attacks on women with boiling water, blowtorch, knife, scissors, baseball bat and even a corkscrew!

Evil Step-Dad...

The hate-figure of "the evil step-dad" is used in many of their stories, which usually includes abusing their step-children.

Chat mags - Do They Promote Rape Culture?

Women's chat mags - Do They Promote Rape Culture?

October 2017 women's chat mags showing a prominent use of the word "RAPED" on their front pages, presumably to encourage females to buy them - or their children if they have the money.
These women's chat mags all show a prominent use of the word "RAPED" on their front pages.
(taken at a Tesco supermarket, 25th October, 2017)
According to the dictionary reference site, Dictionary.com, "Rape Culture" is defined as:

"a subset of values, beliefs, and behaviors in a society that trivializes or normalizes sexual violence, including rape."

The Lad's Mags were condemned and removed from the shelves for promoting rape culture.

Protesters outside a Tesco store, calling attention to the rape culture of the Lads Mags magazines.
But they ignore the women's chat magazines for sale inside.

But the women's Chat Mags have never been challenged.

Remember the definition of Rape Culture?
"...trivializes or normalizes sexual violence, including rape."

They trivialise rape and use it as casual entertainment for women...

...and to sell more magazines...

Other Campaigns

Contact Other Similar Groups

Although the list is pitifully small, there are other campaigns that are helping get these magazines under control.

Child’s Eye Line UK

Child's Eye Line UK
  • Child’s Eye Line UK is campaigning to stop sexualised, sexist and damaging material being displayed at child height in shops and public spaces and porn being easily accessible to children on the Internet. These products are usually displayed at child’s eye line, often right next to the comics and sweets that children are drawn to, using bright colours and easy to read words which catch children’s attention.  Grown ups can choose whether to access adult content…let’s protect children until they are old enough to make their own decisions.
  • Child’s Eye Line UK has followed the magazines, Pick Me Up, Chat, That’s Life, Real People, Take A Break and Love It! for a year. Every week the stories on the front page use shock, sensational headlines about child abuse. These mags consistently use salacious language about serious crimes to sell. It is clear that they are using sex abuse as a sales tool for profit.
  • Lines such as, “Dad dressed as Santa and raped us”, “raped at 5 by school bus driver”, “Paedo said he’d kill me”, “Sordid lust of my paedo uncle” are common.
  • Rape Crisis have slammed the magazine headlines as, “triggering, offensive, trivialising and ignorant of the lifelong impacts for survivors of child sexual abuse”.
  • Children learning to read see these mags at their height, just above kids mags in every newsagent and supermarket. We aim to change this culture of normalising rape. We believe that magazines should not use sexual violence to sell. We are asking all retailers to be responsible with their displays and keep this material away from children and abuse survivors.

A Typical Unsavoury Year of Women's Chat Magazines

A Typical Unsavoury Year of Women's Chat Magazines

Women's Chat Magazine front page samples through the year of 2018

  • These are some of women's chat magazines sold every week during the year of 2018.  These headlines of death, rape, torture and child abuse are designed to attract a female audience while portraying men as being cruel and evil.
  • These magazines come out every week with a new crop of headlines, but we're only showing one or two week's sample from the month's worth.
  • We've printed out some (but not all) of the front page headlines underneath their photos in case you can't see them.
  • Capitals used here reflect the use of capitals on these front pages, showing you the words they want to emphasis.
  • All these photos were taken of the magazine shelves in major supermarkets in the UK over 12 months in 2018.
  • Almost all these magazines were all displayed about 4 feet off the ground, easily seen by children.
  • Millions of these magazines are sold every week.
  • These samples are from 2018, but it could have been any year.
